A 3.5-magnitude earthquake was detected near Sipalay City over the weekend. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the tremor struck north of the city yesterday morning around 6:24 a.m.
A subsequent Phivolcs bulletin reported no damages as a result of the seismic activity nor were there any anticipated aftershocks.
Recently, a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck Sipalay City on Christmas Day; in addition, earlier that month, a total five earthquakes were recorded in and around the city between December 7 and 8, with the highest measuring 2.7 in magnitude.
A few days later, the locality was struck by a minor 1.4-magnitude tremor.
Earthquakes that range between 3.0 and 3.9 in magnitude are considered between a Level II and III on the Mercalli Intensity Scale, where a few people feel the tremor, particularly those on the upper floors of buildings; while quakes ranging between 1.0 and 3.0 in magnitude are often classified as a Level 1 on the Mercalli Intensity Scale, where the tremor goes almost undetected./WDJ
