The United Nations recognizes December 20 as International Human Solidarity Day, which the international organization characterizes as being among the “fundamental values of international relations in the 21st Century.”
On this day, member-nations are expected to celebrate diversity, remind governments to respect international agreements, raise public awareness on the importance of solidarity, and focus on poverty eradication.
Solidarity was named in the United Nations Millennium Declaration, which was drafted in 2000. The charter named various fundamental values intended to develop “a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world.”
“Global challenges must be managed in a way that distributes the costs and burdens fairly in accordance with basic principles of equity and social justice,” the declaration defined solidarity. “Those who suffer or who benefit least deserve help from those who benefit most.”
Other fundamental values were identified as equality, tolerance, respect for nature, and shared responsibility./WDJ
