The University of Santo Tomas (UST) flirted with disaster before scoring an 81-71 win over Far Eastern University (FEU) in the first round of the 82nd UAAP men’s basketball semifinals last Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
After seeing their 26-point lead trimmed to five, leading 70-65, UST battled back with shots from Henri Lorenzo Subido, Soulemane Chabi Yo, and Mark Nonoy to extend their advantage to 78-65. FEU then replied with back-to-back triples to trim the deficit to 78-71 with under a minute left; however, Zachary Huang and Brent Paraiso free throws sealed the win.
Chabi Yo finished with a double-double for UST on 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Paraiso scored 18 markers, and Subido chipped 14.
The win moves UST into the second round and will face the University of the Philippines, who have a twice-to-beat advantage.
Game 1 is scheduled for this weekend, November 10./ASC, WDJ
