The annual Cinco de Noviembre observance, which is celebrated today in Negros Occidental and commemorates the 1898 Negros Revolution, is a special non-working holiday according to RA 6709, which signed into law in 1989 by then-President Corazon Aquino.
The special non-working holiday designation comes with adjusted pay schedules.
Those working are entitled to 30 percent of their regular pay for the first eight hours, along with an additional 30 percent for work in excess of the ascribed time period.
Last month, the Negros Occidental provincial government announced they would be distributing cash entitlements to 33 centenarians, or those who have reached the age of 100, during this year’s celebration at the Capitol Park and Lagoon.
The province will also recognize the 2019 Outstanding Negrosanons during the ceremony. This year’s recipients include Rodolfo Reveche for culture and arts promotion for community development, Jesus Antonio Orbida for organic farming, Charlie Co for visual arts, Chef Fernando Aracama for culinary tourism, and Teodoro Locsin for public service./WDJ
