In response to demonstrations by various transport operators nationwide, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo stated, “Not even such moves will paralyze the transport sector.”
The presidential official, who was in Bacolod City yesterday for the 19th National Public Employment Service Office Congress at the SMX Convention Center at SM City Bacolod, said the problems currently faced by transport operators all stem from poor infrastructure.
He noted, it is one of the reasons why President Rodrigo Duterte is aggressively pushing his “Build, Build, Build” program.
“The problem is Congress,” he explained. “When the president asked for emergency powers, Senator Grace Poe and her colleagues blocked it.”
Currently, the transport sector is facing problems across the country, especially in Metro Manila.
Public utility vehicle (PUV) operators recently protested the government’s PUV modernization program by claiming the replacement of old PUVs is too expensive.
The modernization program requires jeepneys to upgrade to Euro-4 quality, which refers to vehicles being in compliance with European emission standards./DGB, WDJ
