Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo yesterday qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games after making the finals of the ongoing 2019 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.
The 19 year old currently sits in 18th place in the all-around with a total 82.164 points. Most notably, he came in seventh in the floor exercise, where he scored a 14.633.
The men’s all-around final is scheduled for Friday, October 11 (CET).
“He performed beautifully,” said Gymnastics Association of the Philippines President Cynthia Carrion in an interview with ABS-CBN News. “The whole place—a crowd of about 30,000—applauded him.”
Russian gymnasts Nikita Nagornyy and Artur Dalaloyan currently lead the all-round race with 87.333 and 86.531 points, respectively.
Yulo is the second Filipino athlete to qualify for the Summer Games, which begin in Tokyo, Japan on July 24, 2020, following pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena, who surpassed the 5.80-meter Olympic qualifying standard after registering 5.81 meters at a meet last month in Chiara, Italy./ASC, WDJ
