Columbian Dyip head coach Johnedel Cardel said he hopes the addition of rookie Jaymar Perez will help boost the team in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup, which begins next week, September 20.
“Sobrang saya dahil ang ganda talaga ng ipinapakita niya para sa bayan (It’s very exciting because, from what was seen of him when playing for the country, was very good),” the coach said. “Iyung kumpiyansa niya, experience na nakuha doon [sa FIBA Basketball World Cup], madadala nita dito sa Columbian (What he brings to Columbian Dyip is his confidence and FIBA Basketball World Cup experience).”
“Kasi iyung maging national player ka malaking bagay sa psyche ng isang player, lalo pa ganyan, World Cup pa (Playing for a national team makes a big impact on the psyche of a player, especially playing in a World Cup),” he added. “Kaya ‘yung expectations namin sa kanya, once na bumalik na siya dito sa Columbian, he’ll be a much better player and one of the true leaders of this team (Once he returns to the Columbian Dyip, we expect him to be a much better player and one of the true leaders of the team).”
Meanwhile, Cardel said he did not have to think twice when Philippine men’s national basketball team coach Joseller ‘Yeng’ Guiao approached him and sought Perez’ services.
“Sabi ko sa kanya (Perez), ‘Gawin mo lahat ang dapat mong gawin’ (I said to Perez, ‘Whatever you do, do your everything’),” the coach noted. “Always, be a good teammate to your team—win or lose.”/ASC, WDJ
