UNESCO observes every September 8 as International Literacy Day in order to foster an understanding of “the importance of literacy for individuals, communities, and societies and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies.”
This year’s observance hopes to promote multilingualism, along with supporting 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages.
“Our world is rich and diverse with about 7,000 living languages,” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoula. “These languages are instruments for communication, engagement in lifelong learning, and participation in society and the world of work.”
“Embracing linguistic diversity in education and literacy development is therefore a key part of developing inclusive societies that respect ‘diversity’ and ‘difference,’ [and] upholding human dignity,” she added.
Last June, a literacy app developed by Smart Communications was shortlisted at this year’s Asia Mobile Awards. It was the only Filipino entry recognized this year by the award-giving body, which honors the latest and most innovative mobile products, apps, devices, services, and initiatives.
The application promotes mother tongue literacy through various lessons, videos, storytelling, songs, and games.
Currently, the app is available in Tagalog; Cebuano; Arabic; Matisalug, the language of an indigenous tribe local to the Davao Region and province of Bukidnon; Waray; Katao or Inabaknon, which is native to Northern Samar; Kapampangan; and Ilokano./WDJ
