Senator Manny Pacquiao returns to the ring on Sunday morning (PHT) when he faces American boxer Keith Thurman, Jr. in a World Boxing Association super welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada in the United States.
The Filipino boxer expressed optimism ahead of the bout.
“We are really [at] 100 percent condition—physically, mentally, and, most of all, spiritually,” the senator noted. “I’m sure my opponent worked hard and trained hard; I’m expecting a good fight.”
In response to the war of words Thurman is trying to ignite, prodding the Filipino champion with verbal jabs such as “With those little T-Rex arms, he’s about to get beat up” and “This little bunny rabbit, the way he hops around the ring… I’m not gonna (sic) lose to a bunny rabbit,” Pacquiao offered a modest comeback.
“It’s easy to say but I don’t know if it’s easy to do in the ring,” he said. “It’s going to be an exciting fight—a once in a lifetime fight with more action.”
For Thurman, he relished in the opportunity to fight an elected official.
“I get to punch a senator in the face,” the American boxer stated. “He’s about to get beat up.”
“I’m an undefeated champion for a reason—I’m diverse,” he added.
Pacquiao enters the fight with a 61-7-2 win-loss-draw record with 39 stoppage wins, while the undefeated Thurman holds a 29-0-0 boxing record with 22 stoppage wins.
The Bacolod City government earlier announced they will be setting up eight viewing sites for the fight.
According to Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, the viewing sites will be at gymnasiums in Barangays Sum-ag, Handumanan, Mansilingan, Singcang-Airport, Taculing, Villamonte, and Granada; along with Banago Elementary School./ASC, WDJ
