following deadly meat grinder mishap

After an 18-year-old man was killed over the weekend from getting caught in a meat grinder at Akhiras Manokan and Frozen Goods in Barangay Mansaya-Lapuz, located in Iloilo City’s La Paz district, the owners of the establishment have decided to shut down.
According to Department of Labor and Employment-Region VI (DOLE-6) Director Cyril Ticao, the company owners appeared before yesterday’s DOLE hearing and signaled their intention to close down permanently.
Ticao insisted the decision was made by the owners as DOLE had only issued a work stoppage order following the deadly incident.
Six other workers will likely be affected by the closure.
Based on statements provided by the victim’s co-workers to police, the fatality, identified as Jomar Junco of Lauan, Antique, was reaching for an object inside the machine while it was in operation when his hand was caught by the blades.
One of the victim’s co-worker scrambled to turn off the machine by pulling the plug, but it was too late and he was already pulled halfway inside.
The victim’s employer noted, Junco was not trained to operate the machine./WDJ
