Kato: More needs to be done for those whose ‘choices’ are constrained

After recently receiving the State of World Population 2019 Report, which is compiled by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Commission on Population and Development (Popcom) shared the data through a press release, pointing to “the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive health” among the keys to reducing poverty in the country.

“UNFPA takes pride in having partnered with the Philippines and witnessed together so many remarkable achievements together in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights,” said UNFPA Philippines Representative Iori Kato. “Much more needs to be done to empower those who are not yet able to enjoy their rights and whose choices are still constrained.”

The report also discussed the Philippine Development Plan, which includes the goal of “reducing fertility.”

According to Popcom executive director, Dr. Juan Antonio A. Perez III, the Philippine government is strong in its pursuit of “the realization of every Filipino’s sexual and reproductive rights.”

The State of World Population 2019 Report also discussed stigmatization when it comes to sexual health.

“Stigmatization can prevent individuals from seeking services they need and are entitled to,” the report noted. “Unmarried women, for example, may be hesitant to seek sexual and reproductive health care, particularly services such as contraception and safe abortion.”

“A recent review found that some providers held negative attitudes towards abortion in most countries in Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa,” the report added./WDJ
