“…See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction.  For I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase… But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed…” –Deuteronomy 28:15

Times have really changed. While a large portion of the country has run dry and Filipinos are deprived of potable water due to scorching heat, killer flash floods are submerging parts of Indonesia, killing at least 50. Such a situation reminded me of passages from the Bible that warned of rains, floods, strong winds, and scorching heat capable of burning human skin affecting the earth. Are these weather conditions prophecies from the Bible?

Whether these calamities are because of Biblical prophecy or mere coincidence, it would be important for everybody to inform themselves of what it says in the Bible about such natural tragedies what it suggests as a remedy.

Matthew 7:24-27 quotes Jesus saying: “The rains will come, and so do the floods and the winds.” He said there are only two kinds of people who will face these conditions – the “wise,” who will not suffer destruction or death from these calamities; and the “fools,” who will surely suffer death and destruction as a result of the aforementioned weather aberrations.

Who are these people? Jesus said the “wise” are those who listen and obey the Bible; meanwhile, the “fools” are those who listen to His word but disobey. According to Deuteronomy 28, the “wise” are those bestowed with God’s blessings and the “fools” are those who have been cursed.

Many believe God would not curse people who pray and believe in him but this is not accurate. The Bible is clear: “While God is the God of love, He is also the God of justice, being just and righteous all the time.”

What does this mean? It means God so loved the world that He came down to earth in human likeness and form to accept the penalty for man’s sinfulness in order man can escape hell. However, the earlier cited passages reveal, when the man that God loved ever so deeply is no longer listening and obeying His commands, He will not hesitate to kill man through curses. Therefore, we should learn to read God’s Bible and obey His commands.
