The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) recently revealed the Western Visayas is the second-highest producer of milkfish, locally referred to as bangrus or bangus, behind Region 1.
BFAR Technical Services Assistant Director Drusila Esther Bayate noted, the country produced over 400,000 metric tons (MT) of the fish, with 79,000 MT originating from Region VI.
“Western Visayas is traditionally a milkfish area,” she noted.
Earlier this month, during the 10th Visayan Sea Governors Summit in Oton, Iloilo, five governors, including Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr. and Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr., signed an agreement committing to the ecosystem approach to fisheries management framework, which promotes the conservation, protection, and restoration of Visayan Sea marine biodiversity./WDJ
