The Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) is currently monitoring five low pressure systems located within the Philippine Area of Responsibility.
CDRRMO cluster head, Executive Assistant Joemarie Vargas, said one of the low pressure systems recently formed north of Coron, Palawan and is expected to bring more rains to Bacolod City and the rest of Negros Occidental.
He said the low pressure area is currently traveling towards Mindoro and there is a chance it could develop into a tropical depression over the weekend.
Once it forms into a storm, the system would be named ‘Neneng,’ based on the names for tropical cyclone released by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Meanwhile, PAGASA’s general flood advisory, which has been issued since Wednesday morning, is still active in the Western Visayas and residents are being cautioned about possible floods and landslides.
Vargas explained, based on CDRRMO records, August and September are the height of the rainy season. However, he also called the patterns “abnormal,” attributing possible adjustments to climate change.
Vargas also warned, the northern portion of the Visayas should expect one to two tropical storms in October, when the weather system changes into the northeast monsoon./DGB, WDJ
