Every September, the Philippines observes National Clean-Up Month, which seeks to promote clean-up and environmental greening activities in accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 244, signed in 1993 by then-President Fidel V. Ramos.
The proclamation notes, the observance is based on Clean-Up Day, a holiday initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme and the Australian division of Clean Up the World, a non-profit organization that looks to unite communities in protecting the environment.
This year’s World Cleanup Day falls on September 15.
The objective of the national observance aims to reduce garbage, promote recycling and composting, and rehabilitate waterways.
Activities expected during the month include formal and non-formal waste management education, pollution control, and youth leadership training.
The proclamation also recognizes World Clean and Green Week, which runs from September 17 to 23 every year./WDJ
