Thanks to the national government’s “Build, Build, Build” initiative, Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) opened its second terminal last month. Considered the gateway to the Visayas and southern Philippines, MCIA is the second-largest airport in the country, offering 23 international and 33 domestic destinations. The facility also accommodates for 26 carriers.
As mentioned in previous “WatchMe” columns published in Watchmen Daily Journal last month, the airport, which spans 6.5-hectares and can accommodate 4.5 million passengers, was designed by Hong Kong-based architectural firm Integrated Design Associates.
The most recognizable element in the terminal is the roof structure, made of an array of glued-laminated timber wood arches from Austria. The arches create a dramatic internal space./WDJ
