During a recent Nutrition Month observance in Murcia, Murcia Vice Mayor Gerardo Victor Rojas discussed “backyard farming,” an activity endorsed by Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Ernell Tumimbang.

“Most of those who go hungry and become malnourished are those who do not have money,” the town official said. “Tumimbang advocates backyard farming, so there is something to harvest to eat.”

During the event, malunggay saplings were planted in a vegetable garden at Smile Village Elementary School.

In addition, Tumimbang suggested including fruits, vegetables, and livestock as part of backyard farming.

Earlier this month, during the Nutrition Month launch in La Carlota City, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Nona Tad-y called on local residents, along with schools, to plant more fruits and vegetables in an effort to promote healthier lives and combat malnutrition.

“Start food garden in your homes,” she said. “When we have enough food, we don’t go hungry, we live longer, save the environment, and we live a satisfied and happy life.”/WDJ
