The House of Representatives recently approved on its third and final reading a bill that would provide Aklan with a second congressional district.
Aklan lone district Rep. Carlito Marquez refiled the bill earlier this year, which had previously been submitted by Marquez’ predecessors Reps. Teodorico Haresco, Jr. and Florencio T. Miraflores, who currently serves as Aklan governor.
According to a congressional release, the first legislative district will include Altavas, Balete, Banga, Kalibo, New Washington, Libacao, and Madalang; while the second will be comprised of Buruanga, Ibajay, Lezo, Makato, Malinao, Nabas, Numancia, Tangalan, and Malay, which includes resort island Boracay.
The legislation points out, the province has exceeded the constitutional criteria on creating a new congressional district, which requires a minimum population of 250,000 per district./WDJ
