The midterm elections are fast approaching and people are once again excited to campaign for their favorite candidates, especially with Bacolod City expected to see an interesting battle for mayor.

The other day, I was invited to attend a birthday celebration for former Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella, which was a well-attended event. Among those present included Abang Lingkod partylist Rep. Stephen ‘Caraps’ Paduano and Bacolod City Councilor Ricardo ‘Cano’ Tan. Their presence added excitement as they are believed to be potential challengers to incumbent Bacolod City Mayor Evelio ‘Bing’ Leonardia.

But do they have a good chance of winning?

In a three-cornered fight, I believe it would difficult to defeat Leonardia. One of them has to give up their ambition in order for there to be a good chance of unseating the incumbent. However, based on my observations, neither one looks to be giving up on their plans.

Between the two, I think Paduano has the edge given his rapport and experience in politics.

Winning is not only about resources, but the ability to convince the electorate you are worthy of their vote. Needless to say, Paduano is a “man of the masses” and his experience in organizing and his concern for the poor provide an advantage over Tan. He is also available to assist constituent in need, which, to me, is an important tenet of public service.

The birthday celebrant, meanwhile, will be running for Congress again.

Puentevella previously served from 2001 to 2010. In that time he authored several laws of national importance; exhibiting the true essence of a legislator. Whomever he faces will have a hard time since he is a veteran legislator with commendable dedication.

In a previous column, I mentioned the possible tandem between Negros Occidental Vice Government Eugenio Jose ‘Bong’ Lacson and former Negros Occidental fifth district Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer, which, according to a friend, the latter is entertaining the idea. Having one candidate from the north and one from the south would be good representation for the province. Ferrer is also backed with experience serving as La Carlota City mayor after rising in the ranks and accomplishing an impressive record.

In addition, how true are the talks of Negros Occidental third district Rep. Alfredo ‘Albee’ Benitez seeking the governorship? With Lacson and Benitez both belonging to the Love Negros coalition, it will be a problem if one chooses not to concede for the other.

Another factor in the gubernatorial race is President Rodrigo Duterte. He has been a frequent visitor to the city but I don’t want to speculate. His choice is very important – as any politician would understand. Abangan./WDJ
