According to acting Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, the results of the upcoming Liga ng mga Barangay (Liga) polls are not related to next year’s midterm elections.

“I like to think the election of Liga president has nothing to do with the 2019 elections,” the acting governor said yesterday. “It is totally a different scenario.”

Barangay 9 Captain Jovy Pepillo of Victorias City paid a courtesy call on Lacson yesterday. The barangay official is said to be the Love Negros candidate set to challenge incumbent Provincial Liga President Anabelle Bermudo, who sit as an ex-officio of the Negros Occidental Provincial Board.

The incumbent is backed by the United Negros Alliance, led by Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr.

The Liga election is scheduled for July 30.

Meanwhile,  Iloilo City Department of the Interior and Local Government head, Atty. Ferdinand Panes, also announced city Liga elections would be held on July 30.

He explained the July 30 date synchronizes elections for provinces, metropolitan areas, highly-urbanized cities, and independent component cities. An earlier July 16 date is set for component cities and municipal chapters.

Barangay San Juan Captain Pascual Espinosa IV of the Molo district and Barangay President Roxas Captain Irene Ong of the City Proper district are said to be the primary candidates for Iloilo City./DGB, WDJ
