According to the Bacolod City Health Office (CHO), dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), a severe form of dengue fever, was the second leading cause of death in the city last year. Upper respiratory tract infections (URI), which can affect the nose, sinuses, pharynx, larynx, and trachea, came in first, with a total of 2,311 cases recorded.
Last week, CHO reported a nearly 24 percent drop in dengue cases in the city. CHO Environmental Sanitation Division head, Dr. Grace Tan noted, the number of dengue-related fatalities also dropped, with three recorded this year, compared to four last year.
She added, they are looking to further reduce the number of dengue cases in the city and reminded city residents to regularly clean their surroundings in order to eliminate possible breeding grounds for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
Among other prevalent causes of death in Bacolod City included tuberculosis, hypertension, and pneumonia./WDJ
