Kaya FC-Iloilo gave Ceres-Negros FC their first 2018 Philippines Football League (PFL) loss, with a 2-0 defeat at the Panaad Park and Stadium over the weekend.

Kaya striker Robert Lopez Mendy opened scoring in the 10th minute.

The home side had a chance to equalize after Takumi Uesato was brought down in the box; however, midfielder Bienvenido Marañón’s attempt was blocked.

Kaya Defender Alfred Osei later doubled the lead in the 40th minute.

Ceres tried to beef up the squad in the second half, bringing midfielder Stephan Schröck and defender Carli de Murga. Although, despite the visitors losing defender Camelo Tacusalme, after picking up a second yellow card, earning himself a red card, the Negrense side was unable to capitalize.

“They gave 200 percent just to win this game,” Ceres FC assistant coach Ian Treyes said of the Iloilo-City based squad.

“We rested some of our players for our upcoming match in the AFC Cup,” he added. “We have our focus on our next game in Yangon.”

For Kaya coach Noel Marcaida, he noted, “We took advantage of them in that first half.”/JSG, WDJ
