“…Yet, Lord, my God, give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence…” –1 Chronicles 6:19

My mother, 84-year-old Salvacion Haber Lazo Mauricio of San Vicente-Santa Lucia in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, has been confined at a hospital in Metro Manila since last Sunday after suffering a massive stroke. This column was written two days after and her condition turns for the worse almost every second.

Nevertheless, in the face of misfortune, I still have a reason to thank God for the immediate response from countless relatives; friends; former schoolmates; fellow Rotary International members; and colleagues from the Children of God Blood Kin of the Christ Church, or the Simbahang Anak ng Diyos Kadugo Ni Kristo (AND KNK).

In these moments of extreme necessity, it is heartwarming to know many will launch into prayer without question. I will not be able to mention each and every one of these people, but God knows who they are and He will reward each and every one of them for praying for my mother.

The power of prayer

Prayer can truly move mountains and, for some, can transform molehills into mountains. The Bible, in James 5:16, says, “The prayer of a righteous man is both powerful and effective.”

Jesus, our God and Savior, in Matthew 7:7-11, proclaimed those who wish anything from Him must ask, knock, and seek. He said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

He continued, “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”

Prayer is the answer to every problem

“Prayer is the answer to every problem in life. It puts us in tune with Divine Wisdom, which knows how to adjust everything perfectly. So often, we do not pray in certain situations because from our standpoint, the outlook is hopeless. But nothing is impossible with God. Nothing is so entangled it cannot be remedied. No human relationship is too strained to bring about reconciliation and understanding. No habit so deep-rooted that it cannot be overcome. No one is so weak that he cannot be strong. No one is so ill that he cannot be healed. No mind is so dull that it cannot be made brilliant. Whatever we need if trust God, He will supply it. If anything is causing worry and anxiety, let us stop rehearsing the difficulty and trust God for love, healing and power.”
