Iloilo Commission on Elections (Comelec) election supervisor Elizabeth Doronila revealed her agency would be conducting a voter education initiative ahead of the upcoming May 14 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

She said the move intends to help voters determine how to select the “best candidate.”

The local Comelec hopes to make stops in 43 locales across the province before April 14, when the filing of certificates of candidacy begins.

Meanwhile, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Assistant Secretary Jonathan Malaya recently called on voters to remove barangay officials who are not doing their job.

“If your barangay official is non-performing, change your barangay official through the power of the ballot,” he urged.

The DILG official also called for candidates to support certain initiatives of President Rodrigo Duterte, such as the campaign against illegal drugs.

“If there is no support from the barangay officials, then the president’s efforts would not be sustained,” Malaya explained./PLL, WDJ
