Department of National Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana recently pointed out a lacking sense of security among internet users in the country, which he believes could endanger the public.
“Our country’s cybersecurity capability is still in its infancy,” he said. “We need to develop a culture of security among internet users, especially now that terrorists are actively making use of the internet, particularly social media, to recruit, spread propaganda, and commit crime.”
The cabinet official also pointed out other potential dangers lurking online, including child pornography, human trafficking, among others.
“[As] cybercrime increases, we must show our commitment to come up with more efficient and effective security measures to address this grave threat.” Lorenzana stressed.
He suggested more workshops focused on the matter, similar to the two-day seminar where he was speaking, called “Dealing with the DarkNet: Measures to Prevent Violent Extremism,” which took place earlier this week in Quezon City./PLL, WDJ
