After FC Meralco Manila announced they were dropping out of the Philippines Football League (PFL) earlier this month, Ilocos United FC revealed last week they also would not be competing in the upcoming season.
“It has become financially prohibitive to continue participation in the PFL,” club CEO Tony Lazaro wrote in a letter. “The lack of broadcasting exposure in 2017 created an apprehension in the corporate community.”
However, he did express optimism for a possible return in 2019.
“Secured broadcasting exposure will hopefully lead to higher confidence,” Lazaro added.
FC Meralco Manila, who topped the 2017 Philippines Football League table at the close of the regular season, earlier announced they would not be participating in the subsequent season.
According to club management, the organization was unable to acquire new investors.
The recent developments leave the league with six clubs competing in the 2018 season, which kicks off next month./JSG, WDJ
