The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 155 volcanic quakes within a 24-hour period between Sunday and yesterday morning.
Following the phreatic eruption that occured over the weekend, volcanologists said Mt. Kanlaon is presently undergoing a moderate level of unrest.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a phreatic eruption is caused by steam-driven explosions, created by water heated by magma, lava, or new volcanic deposits.
Records by observers at Phivolcs also stated the ash cloud in last Saturday’s eruption reached a height of three kilometers, or 10,000 feet, from the volcano’s summit./DGB, WDJ
