The Base Bahay Foundation, Inc., in partnership with Gawad Kalinga (GK), recently turned over 50 homes in Barangay Cabug, Bacolod City, part of the organization’s continuing effort to provide disaster-resilient housing.
“As we continue to grow as a nonprofit foundation, we are also proud to say that we continue to rebuild communities through permanent and sustainable housing solutions,” said Base Bahay General Manager Maricen Jalandoni.
The foundation was founded in 2014 by the Hilti Foundation, an international organization that seeks to benefit underprivileged people. According to Base Bahay, among their objectives includes utilizing “local [and] renewable raw materials for creating sustainable and resilient housing solutions.”
GK Executive Director Luis Oquiñena was also present during the event, calling his organization’s mission “a journey of gifting the poor with our gift of excellence, trying to find a way how to make life better for the least among us.”
“This partnership between Base Bahay and GK is a testament of that commitment,” he added.
The foundation is known for its use of cement-bamboo frame technology, which is said to withstand earthquakes and typhoons.
“Roughly four years after introducing this technology in the Philippines, we have already seen how it has improved the lives of every farmer, family, and partner who make up Base Bahay’s value chain,” Jalandoni noted.
Also in attendance at the event were Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Barangay Cabug Captain Jojo Malayang, among others./PLL, WDJ
