The Commission on Elections (Comelec) recently met with members of the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in preparation for the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, slated for October 23 of this year.
Comelec-Negros Occidental Provincial Election Supervisor, Atty. Jessie Suarez, said they are pushing through with preparations despite the House of Representatives recently approving postponement of the polls.
Based on their calendar of activities, Suarez said certificate of candidacy (COC) filings will take place from October 5 to 11, instead of September 23 as originally scheduled, which will also mark the start of the election period.
Suarez explained the schedule shifted following the said postponement approval.
303rd Infantry Brigade (303IB) commander, Colonel Eliezer Losañes, meanwhile, stated it is important they prepare for the polls, even if there is a high chance they will be postponed.
The 303IB commander added, they are formalizing the Security Coordinating Council, which would oversee the security situation if the elections push through.
Earlier, Abang Lingkod Party-list Rep. Stephen Paduano said there is still ample time for the bill to pass both chambers of Congress.
The House of Representatives already approved, on its third and final reading, the postponement of this year’s barangay and SK elections by a vote of 213-10./WDJ
