Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is open to the lifestyle check ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte.
“I have nothing to hide,” Mabilog said yesterday after Duterte again singled him out in a speech to generals of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Malacañang.
“My house, while often described as a palace, is not quite a palace. It is not as big as pictures would make it appear,” Mabilog said.
Mabilog has long maintained that the “white house” overlooking the Iloilo River is not from ill-gotten wealth.
“Modesty aside, I and my wife were already running a number of businesses before I joined politics,” Mabilog said in a statement.
“I was already living a comfortable life in Manila as an entrepreneur when I came home to run for city councilor. I didn’t become rich because of politics, much unlike many politicians,” Mabilog added.
Mabilog’s wife Marivic was an accountant and comptroller in Canada for more than 20 years before moving back to Iloilo City for good only last year./WDJ
