MAYOR’S WHITE HOUSE. This house of Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog was referred to by President Rodrigo Duterte as a “palace” in a speech yesterday. Duterte also ordered a lifestyle check on Mabilog. Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and his wife Marivic said this house adjacent to the Iloilo River was built from hard work and not from ill-gotten wealth. The Mabilog couple said construction cost only Php 8 million and not more than Php50 million as claimed by critics online. (Tara Yap)

Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog is open to the lifestyle check ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte.

“I have nothing to hide,” Mabilog said yesterday after Duterte again singled him out in a speech to generals of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Malacañang.
“My house, while often described as a palace, is not quite a palace. It is not as big as pictures would make it appear,” Mabilog said.
Mabilog has long maintained that the “white house” overlooking the Iloilo River is not from ill-gotten wealth.
“Modesty aside, I and my wife were already running a number of businesses before I joined politics,” Mabilog said in a statement.
“I was already living a comfortable life in Manila as an entrepreneur when I came home to run for city councilor. I didn’t become rich because of politics, much unlike many politicians,” Mabilog added.
Mabilog’s wife Marivic was an accountant and comptroller in Canada for more than 20 years before moving back to Iloilo City for good only last year./WDJ
