The Bacolod City Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) recently approved on its first reading an ordinance proposing the creation of the Bacolod City Animal Welfare Council.
The ordinance, authored by City Councilor Wilson Gamboa, Jr., seeks to address the basic needs of animals and recommends the establishment of a city dog pound, pet park, and pet-friendly streets.
The legislation also cites RA 8485, or the Animal Welfare Act of the Philippines, which provides protection for animals through the establishment of facilities for breeding, maintaining, keeping, treating, or training animals.
The council would also coordinate with the Public Information Office to promote activities, including City Animal Welfare Awareness Week.
The initial annual budget for the council was quoted at P200,000 from the General Appropriation Fund./WDJ
