Negros Occidental Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) head and technical working group member, Dr. Ma. Lina Sanogal, confirmed economic managers are the ones responsible for the dissolution of the Negros Island Region (NIR) and not President Rodrigo Duterte.
Among the economic managers who pushed for dissolution, she explained in an interview yesterday morning, include individuals from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
Sanogal stressed it would have been better if the NIR was not abolished as the region’s establishment was an example of federalism, which is being aggressively pushed by the Duterte administration.
She added, the region has shown it was able to stand on its own despite being comprised of only two provinces.
Last week, Duterte signed Executive Order No. 38, effectively abolishing the NIR.
The region’s dissolution stemmed from DBM Secretary Benjamin Diokno quoting the cost of the region’s retention at P19 billion./WDJ
