Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Undersecretary for Public Safety Jesus Hinlo, Jr. appealed to residents of Negros to respect the decision by President Rodrigo Duterte to sign Executive Order No. 83, which dissolves the Negros Island Region (NIR).
“As of present, the Philippine government needs the funds to support its priority programs to address problems in peace and order, education, hospitalization, poverty, and infrastructure,” he explained.
It was previously reported, Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Benjamin Diokno quoted the region’s cost to the government at P19 billion.
Hinlo told Watchmen Daily Journal, as a Negrosanon, he is saddened, but reiterated the administration has priority programs and projects that need the funds.
The DILG official noted, although “the dream of Negrosanons to be a one island region has been set aside,” he called the dissolution a “sacrifice” for “ a noble cause,” as the funding would be diverted to assist the government in fighting enemies of the state, provide free college education, offer free medical assistance, and to build more infrastructure./WDJ
