Eugene Torre, Asia’s first grandmaster of chess, recently returned to his hometown of Iloilo City to lead the Iloilo Provincial Chess Association (IPCA) exhibition, which took place over the weekend.
“This is an official celebration of my achievement 43 years ago,” he said. “The importance of that event has not diminished – an Ilonggo became the first grandmaster in Asia.”
The grandmaster said chess should be among the country’s sports promotions, noting, “It’s a mental game and not a physical one.”
Torre also met with Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor, Sr., Iloilo City Lone District Rep. Jerry Treñas, and Iloilo Provincial Sports Director Raymundo Lapating./WDJ
