Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said the upcoming barangay elections, scheduled for October, may still push through, noting, there is currently no law barring the polls.
“There is no law postponing the barangay elections,” he stated. “It may push through unless the president comes out with a position.”
He pointed out, a determination may be made during President Rodrigo Duterte’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) in July.
However, Surigao del Norte 2nd District Rep. Robert Barbers has already introduced a bill to postpone the elections and to give the president the power to appoint new sets of barangay officials nationwide.
Earlier this year, Duterte expressed his intention to postpone barangay polls and to transform the barangay captain position from an elective to an appointive position, and to abolish barangay kagawads./WDJ
