The Iloilo City government recently announced plans to install an intelligent transport system (ITS), which monitors motor vehicles speeds, in an effort to reduce the number of vehicular accidents in the city.
“Hopefully, we can install the first phase of ITS before the year ends,” said Iloilo City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
ITS features closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras that can detect speed.
Diversion Road in the Mandurriao district is being considered for the location of the first phase, to be followed by the Coastal Road; along McArthur Drive in Jaro district, towards Leganes; and along the Circumferential Road, leading to Oton.
Meanwhile, the city government is also studying a proposal by 1987 University of the Philippines-Visayas high school alumni that patterns the local traffic system after the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA)./WDJ
