The upcoming Handurayo Festival of Pontevedra, scheduled from May 4 to 9, will be banning Coca-Cola products, following an executive order by Pontevedra Mayor Jose Benito Alonso.
In the order, he claimed high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has created an “adverse effect to their local economy.”
Alonso blamed HFCS for the drop in sugar prices.
Earlier, Hinigaran, Isabela, Murcia, and La Carlota City declared boycotts of Coca-Cola products in their respective local government units.
Recently, the General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA) announced they would be including the issue of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) importation in their upcoming Labor Day Rally, with Secretary-General Wennie Sancho expressing his desire to see sugar prices increase.
“If sugar prices are high, it will assure the livelihood of sugar workers,” he said./WDJ
