Kate Julianne Martinez of Bago City recently earned a gold medal in the elementary discus throw, the 10th for the Negros Island Region (NIR), in the ongoing 2017 Palarong Pambansa, breaking a record that has stood for ten years.
Martinez’ toss landed at 35.56m, breaking the previous record, set by Negrense Maika de Oro, at 33.07m.
However, in elementary shotput, Martinez finished off the podium in 6th place.
Bago City Mayor Nicholas Yulo has since confirmed an incentive awaits the athlete upon her return home.
Meanwhile, in other athletics events, John Boy Purisima of Calatrava took silver in the secondary boys discus throw, and Bernalyn Bejoy of Bacolod City also won silver in the 400m hurdles./WDJ
