The Department of Justice (DOJ) is moving forward with the establishment of the Negros Island Region (NIR) prosecution office as part of efforts to strengthen prosecution services and improve access to justice in the newly formed administrative region.

Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida led a series of high-level meetings in Bacolod City with local government leaders and DOJ officials to discuss preparations for the regional prosecution office.

The initiative follows the passage of Republic Act No. 12000, which formally established NIR as a separate administrative region.

In line with this development, the DOJ has begun organizing the Office of the Regional Prosecutor to ensure more efficient prosecution services for residents of Negros Island.

During the visit, Vida met with Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya, newly designated officer-in-charge Regional Prosecutor Ulysses Andora, and heads of more than 25 prosecution offices across the region.

Discussions focused on strengthening coordination with local government units (LGUs) and other stakeholders, identifying a permanent office location, and addressing administrative and operational requirements needed for the full implementation of the regional prosecution office.

Vida said the establishment of the NIR prosecution office is a key step in making justice services more accessible and responsive to the public.

“This initiative marks a pivotal step toward accessible and responsive justice in the Negros Island Region. By forging strong partnerships, we are committed to upholding the rule of law and serving our people more effectively,” the justice secretary said.

Officials also discussed improving case management systems, enhancing prosecution efficiency, strengthening interagency coordination with law enforcement and LGUs, and boosting witness protection and victim support programs.

The DOJ is likewise assessing the resource and manpower requirements needed to ensure the long-term and sustainable operation of the regional prosecution office once it becomes fully operational./CJ, WDJ
