The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles wrapped up the first round of the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament with a straight-sets victory over the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors, 25-19, 25-23, 25-16, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Saturday, March 14.
Negrense Jihan Chuatico tallied 12 points, on six attacks, five blocks and a service ace, as the Blue Eagles secured their first win of the season to close the opening round with a 1-6 record.
Ilongga Ana Hermosura also ended with 12 markers, with 11 attacks and a service ace.
Negrense Dona Mae de Leon and Zel Tsunashima ended with 10 apiece for Ateneo.
Ateneo controlled most of the match, showing composure, especially in the second set where they fended off UE’s attempts to extend the frame before pulling away to complete the sweep.
Khy Cepada finished with 13 points, and Van Bangayan added 11 markers for UE, which remained without a victory after seven games.
The Lady Warriors also saw their losing streak stretch to 21 matches dating back to the previous season.
Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses closed the first round on a strong note after sweeping Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20.
Angeline Poyos spearheaded the offense with 16 points, on 15 attacks and a service ace, to go with nine excellent receptions and four excellent digs as the Golden Tigresses notched its second straight win for a 4-3 mark.
Regina Jurado added 10 points and eight excellent digs.
Rookie Avril Bron also concluded with 10 markers, on four service aces, three attacks and three blocks for UST.
Jazlyn Ellarina finished with 10 points to lead the Lady Tamaraws, which saw their three-game winning run snapped to end the first round of eliminations with a 4-3 record./ASC, WDJ
