The annual financial assistance to barangays in Negros Occidental will be temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson announced the decision following the recent release of P56.4 million in aid on Wednesday, March 11.

Lacson emphasized that the suspension aims to safeguard provincial funds to address potential needs of Negrenses affected by global uncertainties.

“We have to make sure that we have enough funds to run the provincial government before we continue this financial assistance to barangays,” Lacson said, expressing hope that the international situation does not worsen.

The move reflects a growing need to prioritize fiscal readiness, particularly as the crisis could have indirect economic impacts locally.

In addition to the suspension, discussions are ongoing regarding counterpart funding from local government units (LGUs) for various programs.

While the provincial government remains committed to contributing its share, Lacson noted that details from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and municipal and city governments are still being finalized.

Cadiz City Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr., president of the Negros Association of Chief Executives, is scheduled to meet with provincial officials to clarify proposed LGU subsidies.

Mayors have also been invited to submit lists of public transportation drivers for possible inclusion in future assistance schemes./CJ, WDJ
