Three fisherfolks from Negros Occidental’s Hinoba-an town who were reported missing at sea have safely returned home after being stranded in the Sulu Sea for two days as their fishing boat, MB Princess Henna, capsized amid strong winds and rough sea conditions.
They were rescued on Sunday, January 25, after the Singapore-flagged bulk carrier MV MAUD and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spotted them adrift in the Sulu Sea while transiting waters off Zamboanga del Norte’s Siocon town.
Hinoba-an Mayor Daph Anthony Reliquias said the rescued fishermen, residents of Barangay Culipapa, were attempting to survive on the open sea when they were located.
“Due to strong winds and sea currents, their boat capsized in the middle of the sea,” Reliquias said, adding that the timely sighting by the passing vessel was crucial to their survival.
The PCG – District Western Visayas, through Coast Guard Station Iloilo, coordinated assistance following the rescue. The fishermen were later escorted to Coast Guard Station Northern Negros Occidental for proper documentation and turnover to their families.
Authorities reported that all three fishermen were in good physical condition upon rescue and did not require immediate medical attention.
An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the sinking of the fishing vessel.
The PCG commended the crew of MV MAUD for their “humanitarian act and outstanding seamanship” in responding to the distress situation and ensuring the fishermen’s safety.
Meanwhile, the Hinoba-an local government has pledged support to help the fishermen recover from the incident.
Reliquias said each fisherman will receive P10,000 in financial assistance along with food packs, as they lost their boat and primary source of livelihood.
“This assistance is meant to help them get back on their feet while we assess further support,” the mayor said./CJ, WDJ
