As part of the heightened security measures for the holiday season, Philippine National Police (PNP) acting chief Lt. General Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr. reiterated yesterday its strict enforcement of the one-strike policy against indiscriminate firing.

Sanctions include dismissal from the service and the filing of appropriate criminal cases.

“The Philippine National Police is strictly enforcing a one-strike policy against indiscriminate firing. This policy underscores the PNP’s firm commitment to protecting lives and ensuring public safety during a period meant for peace, not preventable harm. As the nation welcomes the New Year, the PNP calls on all personnel to set the example of responsibility and restraint,” Nartatez said in a statement.

All PNP personnel were reminded to observe the highest level of discipline and professionalism in the handling of firearms.

Any act of reckless or celebratory gunfire is a serious violation of duty and will not be tolerated under any circumstances, Nartatez said.

“Personnel found guilty of indiscriminate firing shall face immediate administrative sanctions and criminal liability in accordance with existing laws, without warning or second chances,” Nartatez said.

He added that immediate and decisive action is required from all unit commanders while personnel involved in indiscriminate firing will be relieved and placed under preventive suspension at once, pending investigation.

He said command responsibility is absolute. Every level must be accountable to uphold discipline and safeguard public trust in the PNP.

Final sweep vs. illegal firecrackers

In line with the instruction of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to ensure a safe and orderly holiday season, Nartatez also ordered a final sweep on illegal firecrackers and pyrotechnic materials amid the expected influx of fireworks products for the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Nartatez said police forces, especially at the municipal and city levels, should display vigor in going after sellers of banned and illegal firecrackers as these are a threat to public safety.

“The goal is clear: to prevent their proliferation as part of our safety measures for the New Year celebration,” said Nartatez.

The operation will be done both on the ground and online through the Anti-CyberCrime Group.

He said the PNP is already looking into reports that illegal firecrackers are openly sold in Manila’s Divisoria commercial center.

While the PNP is respecting the tradition and belief on New Year celebration, Nartatez urged the public to look for alternative noise-making materials that are safe, especially for children. (PNA)
