The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – Negros Island Region (NIR) reiterated the strict implementation of security measures after illegal drugs were seized from a visitor at the Negros Occidental District Jail – Male Dormitory (NODJ-MD) in Bago City two days before Christmas.

Chief Inspector Juniven Rey Umadhay, BJMP-NIR spokesperson, said in an interview that the suspect, now detained at the Bago City Police Station, has already been charged with violation of Republic Act (RA) 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

“A case was filed before the Bago City Prosecutor’s Office for violation of RA 9165,” he added.

A report of the BJMP-NIR showed that at about 3:38 p.m. on December 23, a jail officer intercepted two sachets of shabu and dried marijuana leaves placed inside a ziplock plastic bag during the conduct of routine and intensified security.

The items were found hidden inside a homemade “kalan” (clay stove) brought in by a visitor identified as James Diaz Jr., resident of Barangay Sum-ag, Bacolod City.

Based on the initial investigation, the BJMP-NIR said Diaz was supposed to deliver the “kalan” containing the illegal drugs to a detained friend facing charges for violation of RA 9165.

The contraband was seized following recent complaints raised by friends and relatives of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), regarding the strict implementation of security measures introduced by the jail management led by Warden Supt. Crisyrel Awe, which they claimed to be restrictive and violative of their rights.

Umadhay said such security protocols are necessary, lawful, and essential to prevent the entry of contraband and ensure the safety and security of PDLs, personnel and visitors.

In a statement, BJMP-NIR Director, chief Supt. Brendan Fulgencio, lauded the alertness, dedication and commitment of the searching jail officer of NODJ-MD.

“Vigilance and professionalism remain key in maintaining drug-free jail facilities. I commend our jail officers for their dedication and commitment in ensuring that no contraband shall enter our jail facilities,” he added. (PNA)
