The La Castellana municipal government paid tribute to residents who perished during Typhoon “Tino” as it marked its annual Christmas switch-on ceremony on December 19, blending remembrance with a call for unity and recovery.

Dubbed “Arangkasanag: Paglaum kag Paghiliugyon,” the ceremony was held in front of the municipal hall and highlighted the town’s continued healing from one of the most devastating storms to hit the area.

A symbolic release of white balloons — each representing a life lost — served as the centerpiece of the program, underscoring both grief and hope for the future.

Before the switch-on, pastors from various religious denominations led a united prayer in honor of those who died and those still missing.

Twenty-seven families later gathered along the town’s main river for a candle-lighting ceremony, offering prayers for their loved ones swept away by the typhoon.

“Despite all the challenges, I urge our residents to come together in prayer so that we can overcome these difficulties as one La Castellana,” Mayor Anejo Nicor said.

“This switch-on ceremony symbolizes our hope and strength. Rest assured, you are not alone. We are here for you,” he added.

Records from the local government show that 13 residents were confirmed dead due to Typhoon “Tino,” while 14 others remain missing.

P10-M still untouched

Meanwhile, the municipality is still awaiting the release of P10 million in financial assistance from the Office of the President, intended to support recovery and relocation efforts.

Vice Mayor Alme Rhummyla Nicor-Mangilimutan said the local government has urged Malacañang to fast-track the processing of documents, as severely affected families remain in need of permanent shelter.

Mangilimutan explained that the delay was partly caused by pending signatures, including that of former Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, who resigned on November 17.

“We are still waiting for the signed documents from Malacañang. Although we are doing all that we can, we cannot control everything,” Mangilimutan said.

The municipal government is preparing to purchase 8.3 hectares of land in Barangay Robles for the relocation of more than 300 families.

Each household is set to receive a lot of up to six square meters.

The landowner has agreed to a staggered payment scheme, though the total cost of the property is still under assessment./CJ, WDJ
