Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson described as a “difficult but popular” proposal the suggestion of Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano for the country’s top officials to step down from their posts.
Cayetano earlier called on the president, vice president, senators, and members of Congress to resign amid the growing loss of public trust over alleged corruption in government projects, particularly in flood control initiatives.
He also proposed holding snap elections where incumbent officials would no longer be allowed to run.
According to Lacson, while such a move would be a tough decision for those in power, it could also serve as a potential solution to the deep-seated problems of corruption and waning confidence in leadership.
“Mahimo nga ini ang mangin sabat sa problema subong sa pungsod, ilabi na kun ang mapilian nga mangin lider ang may integridad kag desidido nga dulaon ang korapsyon,” Lacson said.
The governor added that the idea of a government “reset” could open opportunities for new leaders committed to transparency and genuine public service.
Cayetano’s proposal has sparked debate nationwide, with some lauding it as a bold call for accountability, while others question its practicality and possible political motivations./CJ, WDJ
