The Negros Occidental Provincial Health Office (PHO) is currently investigating two suspected rabies-related deaths reported from January to March.

PHO head Dr. Girlie Pinongan confirmed the cases involve a six-year-old boy from Don Salvador Benedicto town, and a 72-year-old man from Hinoba-an town, both with histories of dog bites.

Pinongan disclosed that the young boy was bitten by a dog recently, while the elderly man had been bitten three years ago and reportedly consumed dog meat, as per initial reports.

She emphasized the need for heightened awareness and prevention measures against rabies.

She added that rabies cases in Negros Occidental are reported quarterly.

The PHO has reiterated the importance of immediate first aid for dog bite victims.

Wounds should be washed thoroughly with soap and water for 10 to 15 minutes before seeking medical attention at the nearest animal bite treatment center.

Negros Occidental is equipped with 21 animal bite treatment centers located in hospitals, city health offices, and rural health units across the province.

These facilities aim to provide timely treatment and prevent fatalities caused by rabies.

The PHO continues to urge residents to take proactive measures in preventing rabies by ensuring pets are vaccinated, and stray animals are managed effectively.

Rabies remains a fatal disease once symptoms appear, making early intervention critical.

As Negros Occidental intensifies its anti-rabies campaign, authorities remind the public of their shared responsibility in combating this deadly yet preventable disease./JB, WDJ
