Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson has urged residents to remain calm and united as the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague continues to hold former President Rodrigo Duterte in custody.
“I will not say [whether] it is right or it is wrong,” Lacson said when pressed to comment about the arrest.
“I’m not a lawyer, so what I will say will not be able to be defended by the law, and what I will have to say will not help the case of the former president,” he added.
Lacson’s appeal comes amid heightened public emotions, with some citizens showing strong support for Duterte and others expressing disappointment over his legal predicament.
The governor acknowledged the public’s right to voice their sentiments, whether it be frustration or dismay towards the government.
“It is not bad to express one’s sentiments,” Lacson said.
However, the governor encouraged the public to channel their energy into peaceful actions, such as organizing prayer vigils, which he believes could foster hope and healing for the divided nation.
Lacson warned that such polarization could have far-reaching consequences, particularly in deterring potential investors and disrupting the economic progress of the Philippines.
While emphasizing that national unity is crucial during this period of uncertainty, the governor called on the public to focus on shared values and principles rather than allowing political differences to deepen existing divides.
Duterte’s detention at the ICC has sparked debates across the nation, with some calling for his release and others supporting international accountability for his controversial war on drugs campaign.
