Local government units and disaster response agencies in Western Visayas were urged to prepare for heat-related illnesses as the region braces for rising temperatures.
Civil Defense Regional Director and Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) chair for Western Visayas, Raul Fernandez, in Memorandum No. 8 released on Tuesday, March 4, said the state weather bureau has been “monitoring the heat index since the start of March 2025 and is anticipating a high heat index for the coming week.”
“In view of this, all are advised to use protective clothing/gear and to be prepared for heat-related illnesses by ensuring all response mobility assets are ready for deployment and medical supplies are ready to cater to emergencies. Furthermore, disseminate public reminders and advisories from DOH [Department of Health] and DOST-Pagasa [Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration] related to prevention of heat-related illnesses,” part of the memorandum said.
Recommendations include limiting outdoor exposure, staying hydrated, avoiding caffeinated drinks, wearing protective gear, and scheduling strenuous activities during cooler hours.
Mayor Jerry Treñas assured residents that the city’s emergency response teams are on high alert, with medical and mobility resources prepared for any crisis.
He urged the public to follow safety guidelines to prevent heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office continues to monitor conditions and will issue updates to safeguard public health. (PNA)
