The Department of Health (DOH) warned the public yesterday against heat illnesses as heat index may rise to 46 degrees Celsius in the National Capital Region until Tuesday, March 4.

In an advisory, the DOH said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) classified temperatures from 33 to 41 degrees Celsius as “extreme caution” while temperatures from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius as “danger.”

Pagasa also forecasts a “danger” heat index in Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, and Olongapo City.

“Ang ganitong mga temperatura ay maaaring humantong sa pamumulikat at pagkahapo na may mga sintomas tulad ng pagkapagod, pagkahilo, sakit ng ulo, pagsusuka, at pagkahilo,” the DOH said.

It added these could lead to heat stroke, a serious condition characterized by unconsciousness, confusion, seizure or convulsion, and death when not addressed.

People experiencing these symptoms are advised to stay in a shady and cool place with good ventilation. They may remove outer clothing and apply a cold compress or ice pack to the head, face, neck, armpits, pulse, ankles, and groin.

“Kung ang pasiyente ay may kamalayan, hikayatin ang madalas ngunit mabagal na pagsipsip ng malamig na tubig. Makipag-ugnayan sa emergency services, o dalhin kaagad ang tao sa ospital,” the DOH said.

Apart from monitoring Pagasa’s report, the DOH advised everyone to drink a lot of water; avoid iced tea, soda, coffee, or alcohol; limit time outdoors from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; use protection like hats, umbrellas, and sunblock; and wear light and loose clothing. (PNA)
